IRVINE -- Led by the powerful right arm of sophomore righty Brett Wallach, the Orange Coast College baseball team notched its third straight Orange Empire Conference win with a 9-0 road victory against Irvine Valley on Saturday.
Wallach pitched eight strong innings -- including five innings of no-hit ball -- with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Combined with the dominating performance of teammate Calvin Drummond, the Pirates (12-7, 3-2 in OEC) have not allowed an earned run over the past 21 1/3 innings.
For the first six innings, the Wallach needed to be near-perfect as Coast held on to a 1-0 lead, courtesy of an RBI single by, of course, Wallach.
In the seventh, OCC finally grabbed control of things with a three-run frame. After back-to-back singles by Scott Hong and Ryan Dunn, Kevin Clark ripped a two-run double to left, scoring both runners for a 3-0 lead. After a groundout moved Clark to third, Ryan Sheeks laid down a squeeze bunt in front of home plate, scoring Clark to make it 4-0.
In the eighth, Drew Hillman opened things with a single, went to second on a balk and scored on an RBI single by Beck Wheeler to make it 5-0.
Finally, the Pirates ran away from the Lasers (8-10, 1-4) in the ninth with an RBI single by D.J. Arellano, a sacrifice fly by Sheeks and a two-run home run to left by Hillman (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI), his second of the season.
