FULLERTON -- Without the services of No. 1 player Brittany Bass, the Orange Coast College women's tennis team managed to pick up a hard-fought 5-4 Orange Empire Conference win over Fullerton College on Tuesday.
Each win was a nail-biter for the Pirates (7-1, 6-1 in conference). The highlight of the day came at No. 3 singles when Kalin Eshelman overcame a 2-6 loss in the opening set to defeat FC's Madeline Hovarter, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, in a match that lasted two-and-half hours.
At No. 4 singles, Hannah Mancino edged out Hornet singles player Kristen Foss, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, while at No. 6 singles, Julia Garofalo swept past Shannay Lee, 6-3, 7-6 (10-8).
In doubles, Eshelman and Melissa Boyer outlasted the team of Tiffany Shaik and Lux Jiminez, 9-7, while Mancino and Heather Wong topped Hovarter and Foss, 8-5.
OCC returns to action on Friday at Irvine Valley, beginning at 2 p.m.
