Track and Field: Vanderwal, Fuentes earn state meet spots in heptathlon

NORWALK -- A pair of Orange Coast College women's track standouts -- Brianna Vanderwal and Liana Fuentes -- have earned a spot in the upcoming California State Meet thanks to their performances at the Southern California Heptathlon Championships, held at Cerritos College on Tuesday and Wednesday.
 
With the top six athletes moving on, Vanderwal and Fuentes each notched that goal. Vanderwal finished fourth overall with 4,060 points, while Fuentes was right behind her teammate, placing fifth with 4,058 points.
 
Vanderwal's point total was earned with a 16,79 in the 100 (620 points), a 5-foot-1 mark in the high jump (678), 28-9 1/4 in the shot put (449), 27.93 in the 200 (636), 14-9 1/2 in the long jump (443), 100-1 in the javelin throw (486) and a 2:25.66 in the 800 (748).
 
For Fuentes, her totals were as follows: a 16.49 in the 100 (655 points), 4-10 1/2 in the high jump (610), 30-7 1/2 in the shot put (486), a 26.66 in the 200 (740), a 15-6 in the long jump (495) a 88-3 in the javelin (418) and a 2:33.16 in the 800 (654).
 
On the men's side, no OCC athlete cracked the top-six. Among the performances for the Pirate men include Mitchell Giles (10th, 5,480 points), Brian Norton (23rd, 4,600 points) and Brandon Shelly (29th, 3,915 points).
