Women's Crew: Pirates perform well at Berg Cup

NEWPORT BEACH -- Under perfect racing conditions, the Orange Coast College women's crew team more then held its own on Saturday morning as the Pirates hosted five four-year universities in the annual Berg Cup.
In the feature race -- the women's varsity 8 -- the Pirates held an early lead before the University of San Diego slipped ahead near the halfway mark and never looked back, posting a winning time of 7 minutes, 5.9 seconds. The Pirates (Alyssa Sunofsky, Alex Silva, Katy Genrich, Amanda Rogers, Katrina Hanxleden, Lisa O'Tolle, Anoush Khojikian, Amber Steinbeck, coxswain Taylor Caldecott) finished five seconds back with a 7:10.9 with UC Irvine (7:23.1) taking third.
Prior to that race, OCC's second varsity 8 (Katie Kelly, Chelsea Glass, Alex Mooty, Brittney O'Brien, Rachel Meyer, Kate Rasch, Brooke O'Brien, Coryn Miller, coxswain Kelsey Mumley) breezed past UC San Diego with a time of 7:32.9 over 26 seconds better than the competition.
Coast's women's novice 4 (Kaylea Sizemore, Christen Preston, Elisha Melkonian, Suzanne Salmans) took on UCI, Chapman and UCSD and topped them all with a winning time of 8:04.0. Chapman (8:29.07) placed second, while UCI (8:43.08) took third.
Another win for the Pirates came in the women's novice 8 as the team of Lauren French, Laura Crosby, Brittney Bebek, Brenna Aumaier, Michelle Hallock, Kate Donovan, Bree Williston, Brittany Somers) took first with a time of 7:04.4, edging out the University of San Diego (7:11.08). In a tight race for third, UCSD (7:27.0) edged out UCI (7:27.3).
Next up for the varsity squad is a trip to Washington for the NCRC race, taking place on Friday at 7 p.m. OCC's novice team will join the OCC men's team in San Diego for the San Diego Crew Classic, which begins on Saturday.
