Track and Field: Pirates top Saddleback, but fall to Riverside

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track and field teams went 1-1 in their tri-meet with Riverside and Saddleback.

The Pirates topped Saddleback -- 100.5-53.5 for the men and 132-18 for the women -- but fell to Riverside -- 100-54 for the men and 108.5-45.5 for the women.
 
For the OCC men, the field events led the way as a pair of Pirates each won a pair of events. Donovan Toban claimed the top spot in the long jump (23 feet, 2 1/2 inches) and triple jump (47-2 3/4), while teammate Eric Grunbaum led the way in the shot put (47-10 1/2) and hammer throw (148-11 3/4).
 
In the 1,500, Sergio Olivarrias rallied in the final lap to edge out Riverside's Alberto Camacho with a winning time of 4 minutes, 6.35 seconds. Camacho took second with a 4:06.83.
 
On the women's side, sophomore standout Cassie Mitchell took the top prize in three events, winning the 800 (2:22.63), the 1,500 (4:47.58) and the 3,000 (10:16.97).
 
Pirate hurdler Brianna Vanderwal edged out Riverside's Jessica Reeder to win the 400 hurdles with a time of 1:05.04.

The Pirates return to the track on Friday when they host their annual Coast Track and Field Classic, beginning at 1 p.m.
