SAN MARCOS -- Fresh off a 24-hit performance against San Diego Mesa, the Orange Coast College baseball team found a much tougher pitching matchup on Wednesday and lost 2-0 to host Palomar. Palomar (26-8-1) picked up a stellar pitching performance from Bobby Jew (7-0), who allowed just two hits over 8 1/3 innings, lowering his ERA to 1.39 for the season. OCC (22-9) picked up its two hits off the bats of Ricky Stokes and Kevin Clark. The Pirates had a chance to even things up in the ninth when Ryan Sheeks walked with one out, sending Jew to the showers. But Comets' closer Casey Edelbrock coaxed a game-ending double play to end the game. Josh Lee and Brett Williams did a solid job of holding the Comets to just one earned run over eight innings, but it wasn't enough. It was OCC's first shutout loss since Fullerton blanked the Pirates 8-0 on March 4, 2008. The Pirates return to action at College of the Canyons on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. They return home to face Long Beach City on Saturday, beginning at noon.
