COSTA MESA -- With 24 colleges and several individual athletes competing, the 2009 Coast Classic Track and Field Invitational lived up to its billing as one of the top meets in Southern California.
One of several top performances from the Pirates came from Donovan Toban, who won the triple jump (46 feet, 6 1/2 inches), placed second in the long jump (22-11) and fourth in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.52 seconds).
Other first-place performances from OCC came from Elijah Landry-Zapien in the 100 (11.18), Justin Rovin in the 400 hurdles (55.72), Eric Grunbaum in the shot put (46-3), Brian Norton in the javelin (170-6) and the men's 400-meter relay team (42.44).
On the women's side, it was another double-win for distance runner Cassie Mitchell, who blazed a winning time of 4:42.5 in the 1,500 and a 10:20.98 in the 3,000.
It was a sea of orange in the 3,000 as eight of the top nine finishes were from OCC, including runner-up Kristen Simek (10:32.58) and third-place finisher Margaret McDuffee (10:43.86).
In the pole vault, a pair of Pirates tied for the top spot as Audrey Crouse and Lisa Dolan each cleared 10-6.
