Men's Volleyball: Pirates to play at Moorpark on Tuesday
Monday, April 20, 2009

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team will travel to Moorpark College on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. to face the Moorpark Raiders in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

The winner of Tuesday's matchup between the Pirates (12-8) and the Raiders (16-2) will take on Golden West College on Thursday at 8 p.m. in the State Semifinals.

This is the second meeting between the two schools this year. Back on Feb. 12, the Raiders swept the visiting Pirates, 30-27, 30-21, 30-27.

In that win over the Pirates, Chris Trauger paced the Raiders with 20 kills and Sean Martin added 10 more kills. Adam Quinn contributed 45 assists. Brendan Keane had 10 digs.

For the season, OCC has had balanced offensive success from sophomore outside hitter Jake Melone (243 kills), sophomore middle blocker Mike Stewart (150 kills), sophomore opposite Cullan Maher (107 kills) and freshman outside hitter Alex Reis (126 kills).

On defense, freshman libero Derek Martinez has been OCC's main weapon, leading the way with 132 digs, while setters Doug Astor (466 assists) and Paul Leon (361 assists) have shared the passing duties.

Moorpark’s lone two losses came at the hands of Western State Champion Long Beach City, a team that OCC beat in five games earlier this season.
