Swimming: Several Pirates shine in opening day of State Meet

LONG BEACH -- Day 1 is in the books at the 2009 CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships and there was plenty to celebrate for the Orange Coast College Pirates at Long Beach's Belmont Plaza.
Led by a record-setting performance by Riki Yano in the 500-yard freestyle (school record and state record time of 4 minutes, 23.52 seconds), the OCC men racked up 225 points, with Santa Rosa (132 points), Diablo Valley (110), Ventura (100) and Golden West (87) rounding out the top five.
Yano, who surpassed OCC standout Andres Roestenberg's 1992 state-best time of 4:26.09, cleared the field by over 10 seconds to claim the state title. Teammate Kirk Pfotenhauer placed third with a 4:37.7.
In addition to Yano's performance, a pair of Pirate relay teams claimed titles as well as the foursome of Yano, Kyle Thorsness, Eric Crimson and Daren Brubaker claimed the top spot in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:22.46.
In the 400 medley relay, the trio of Brubaker, Crimson and Andrew Choi highlighted the Pirates' championship time of 3:22.97.
Other finals performances for the OCC men include Choi in the 200 individual medley (2nd, 1:51.03), Crimson in the 200 IM (3rd, 1:51.71), Chris Bernard in the 200 IM (6th, 1:54.67), Brubaker in the 50 free (5th, 21.0), Chris Salgado in 3-meter diving (2nd, 268.05) and Jonathan Franzen in 3-meter diving (3rd, 265.50).
On the women's side, OCC trails Sierra College by 24 points (167-143) after the first day's events, with Santa Rosa (136), Diablo Valley (114) and Santa Monica (107) rounding out the top-five.
Diving standout Jamie Pearce claimed the top spot in the 1-meter event with a state-best 216.50 points, while teammate Mishka Hulka placed third with 198.35 points.
Other finals performances include the 400 medley relay foursome of Mariana Perez-Seda, Jamie Krispel, Lindsay Ronce and Danielle Lavery (2nd, 3:57.09), Perez-Seda in the 50 free (6th, 24.67), Krispel in the 100 IM (7th, 1:01.1), Lavery in the 500 free (3rd, 5:08.29) and the quartet of Perez-Seda, Krispel, Natalie Bell and Caitlyn Carralejo in the 200 free relay (6th, 1:39.51).
Day 2 of the State Championships will take place on Friday, with preliminaries starting at 9:30 a.m. and the finals kicking off at 5 p.m. at Belmont Plaza.
