Swimming: OCC MEN CLAIM STATE TITLE! OCC WOMEN FINISH THIRD IN STATE!

 LONG BEACH -- After a one-year hiatus, the men's swimming state championship trophy is back in familiar surroundings.
With a dominating performance from start to finish, the Orange Coast College men's swim team wrapped up its third state title in four years on Saturday at the COA-CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Belmont Plaza.
OCC's men finished with 655 points, an incredible 263 points higher than state runner-up Santa Rosa (392). Ventura (339), Diablo Valley (304) and Golden West (289) round out the top five.
On the women's side, the Pirates wrapped up a very successful season with a third-place team finish in state with 438.5 points, trailing just Santa Rosa (578) and Sierra (526). Diablo Valley (363.5) finished fourth, while San Diego Mesa (253) placed fifth . It's been a record-setting weekend for freshman standout Riki Yano. After posting the state's all-time best performance in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday, Yano shattered state records in the 200 free on Friday (1 minute, 37.08 seconds) 1,650 free (15:18.45) on Saturday. His 200 record topped Richard Bera's 1993 time of 1:37.56, while his 1,650 time was over four seconds faster than Bill Babashoff's 29-year-old record time of 15:22.62. Not to just have the spotlight for himself, Yano also joined teammates Eric Crismon, Kyle Thorsness and Daren Brubaker for a record-setting time of 3:01.21 in the 400 free relay, edging the previous-best time of 3:01.36, set by Diablo Valley last year. In that race, OCC was in third place, .16 seconds behind Golden West and Ventura heading into Yano's 100-yard leg of the event. Within the first 50 meters, OCC grabbed the lead by .12 seconds over GWC and never looked back. That lead grew to under one second as GWC took runner-up at 3:02.3. On Friday, Yano, along with Crismon, Andrew Choi and Kirk Pfotenhauer topped GWC's 1998 state record time in the 800 free relay (6:46.65) with a championship time of 6:44.04. In all, Yano individually broke, or helped brake SIX state records this weekend. In 1-meter diving, OCC's Chris Salgado topped'em all with 273.10 points. San Diego Mesa's Laquan Brown finished second with 250.55 points, while El Camino's David Austin (249.65) took third. Other top-eight performances from Friday and Saturday include Pfotenhauer in the 1,650 free (4th, 16:12.55) and 400 IM (5th, 4:07.7), Crismon in the 200 free (3rd, 1:41.14), Thorsness in the 100 breaststroke (8th, 1:00.51), Choi in the 200 breaststroke (2nd, 2:04.38) and 400 IM (2nd, 3:56.81), Brubaker in the 100 backstroke (3rd, 51.74), Aaron Hoff in the 1,650 free (6th, 16:27.47), Sam Edman in the 1,650 free (8th, 16:38.11) and 200 IM (1:43.58), Kawai Smith in the 200 back (6th, 1:54.83), Chase Secrest in the 200 breaststroke (5th, 2:10.44) and 100 breaststroke (4th, 59.1), Chris Bernard in the 400 IM (7th, 4:09.32) and OCC's 200 medley relay team (2nd, 1:33.99). On the women's side, there were no state champions crowned over the final two days but the Pirates posted several top-three performances including Danielle Levery in the 200 free (2nd, 1:53.28), Natalie Bell in the 50 butterfly (3rd, 25.91), Jamie Krispel in the 50 breaststroke (3rd, 30.98) and Jamie Pearce in 3-meter diving (2nd, 210.25 points). Other top-eight performances for the Pirates include Lavery in the 100 free (5th, 52.8), Mariana Perez-Seda in the 100 backstroke (6th, 59.4) and 50 backstroke (5th, 27.42), Lindsay Ronce n the 100 butterfly (5th, 57.97) and 200 IM (6th, 2:12.81), Mishka Hulka in 3-meter diving (6th, 188.50 points), OCC's 400 free relay (4th, 3:35.18), 800 free relay (4th, 7:54.6) and 200 medley relay (4th, 1:49.99)
