COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's and women's track teams each finished in second place at the 2009 Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday at OCC.
The Coast women finished with 243 points, finishing behind Riverside's 308 points. On the men's side, the result was the same as Riverside placed first with 317 points and OCC (158) took runner-up.
The highlight for the Pirates came on the women's side, where sophomore standout Cassie Mitchell continued to scorch the OCC track, posting OEC title wins in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 17.27 seconds), the 1,500 (4:39.63) and the 5,000 (18:22.06).
In fact, a fourth of Coast's points for the entire track meet came from those three events as a small army of Pirate runners controlled the distance events.
Kimone Hewitt placed second in the 800 (2:18.64) and third in the 1,500 (4:45.15), Teri Mitchell placed fifth in the 800 (2:26.16), Kristen Simek took sixth in the 1,500 (4:49.71) and fifth in the 5,000 (18:36.16), Margaret McDuffee placed third in the 5,000 (18:31.07) and seventh in the 1,500 (4:54.99) and Hillary Labelle took seventh in the 5,000 (18:42.19).
On the men's side, Donovan claimed the lone OEC title of the day, leaping past the rest of the field in the triple jump with a mark of 46 feet, 8-3/4 inches.
Several runner-up performances for the Pirates include Luis Gallardo in the 800 (2nd, 1:57.67), Luis Gallardo III in the hammer throw (156-1/4) and the 1,600 relay (3:16.59).
