Baseball: Pirates lose to Golden West, 7-4
Tuesday, April 28, 2009

COSTA MESA -- Suddenly, the "W" flag on the Orange Coast College baseball field is missing in action.

For the second time in less than a week, last-place Golden West College sent the first-place Pirates to the canvas with a stunning 7-4 Orange Empire Conference loss, their third straight loss at home.

GWC (13-25-2, 5-17 in OEC) jumped out to a 4-0 lead and after OCC (28-12, 16-6) got to within 4-3, the Rustlers added on in the eighth and ninth innings to prevail.

Alex Bayus was the big bat for the Rustlers, knocking a pair of two-run home runs over the left field fence and finished 2-for-4 with two runs and four RBI. Geno DeAngelis added three hits, a run scored and two RBI, while Alex Rosales reached base with a pair of hits and scored ahead of both of Bayus' bombs.

That was enough for GWC starter Mark Trentacosta (4-4). The freshman lefty allowed four runs (three earned over 8 1/3 innings, walking four and striking out three.

Brett Williams (4-2) took the loss for OCC, allowing six runs (four earned over 7 1/3 innings with no walks and three strikeouts.

Offensively, four Coast players -- Drew Hillman (2-for-3, one run, one RBI), Beck Wheeler (2-for-4), Ricky Stokes (2-for-4, two runs) and Ryan Dunn (2-for-3, one run) -- had multiple hits.

OCC's loss, combined with Santa Ana's 7-3 win over Riverside, puts the Pirates and Dons in a first-place tie atop the OEC standings with two games remaining.

The Pirates will return to OEC action on Thursday at home against Irvine Valley
