Tuesday, April 28, 2009

OJAI -- With the best players in the state competing, two singles and two doubles teams from the Orange Coast College men's tennis team took to the courts at the Ojai Invitational last weekend and the Pirates did more than hold their own.

Highlighting the event was the strong play from the doubles duo of Laurent Minguez and Felix Demiro. After a 6-2, 6-1 win in the Round of 64 and a 6-4, 6-3 win in the Round of 32, the Coast pair took on top-seed Doug Edwards and Jason Wall from Cerritos in the Round of 16.

With a strong opening, Minguez and Demiro topped Edwards/Wall 6-4 in the first set and had match point at 5-3 in the second set before the Falcons' duo turned on the jets to prevail 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

OCC's other doubles team in the event, Brad Fisher and Yannick Lepage, also advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to seventh seeded Nike Bote and Carlos Gomez of Cerritos, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Prior to that, Fisher/Lepage upset 10th seed Tom Nomof and Justin Zertuche of Modesto to reach the Sweet 16.

In singles play, Fisher opened his bracket with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Reedley's Eric Gardner before falling, 6-1, 6-3 to fourth seed Tiago Hayashi of College of the Desert.

Minguez, seeded 11th in the tourney, swept past Mohammad Mukhtar of Cosumnes River (6-0, 6-0) and Santa Rosa's Brendan Kuhlman (3-6, 6-1, 6-2) before falling to sixth seed Joaoa Noguiera of Fresno City, 6-2, 6-4.
