COSTA MESA -- Sophomore Brittany Bass and freshman Melissa Boyer had themselves a busy Thursday at the 2009 Southern California Regional Tournament. Fortunately, with the tourney held at Orange Coast College, they didn't have far to travel.
Bass, the No. 7 seed in singles, earned a first-round bye before defeating Cerritos' Shamariah DeRojas, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to Friday's Round of 16, where she will face Sarena Dickerson of Bakersfield at 9 a.m.
Boyer, unseeded in the tourney, fell in the Round of 32 to Bakersfield's Katie O'Leary, 6-0, 6-1.
In doubles, Boyer and Bass joined forces and, as the No. 3 seed, topped Glendale's Sarah Aguilar and Mineli Ebramini, 6-0, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16. There, they will take on Palomar's Carly De Anda and Ashley Simpson on Friday, once the singles matches have been completed.
The SoCal Regionals will continue on Friday and run through Saturday at Orange Coast College.
