LONG BEACH -- After a successful regular season, Orange Coast College men's tennis standout Laurent Minguez has continued his strong play by winning the 2009 Southern California Regional Championships this past weekend at Long Beach City College.
Entering the tourney as the No. 8 seed, Minguez opened strong with straight-set wins over Glendale's Joey Tresierras (6-4, 6-0) and El Camino's Tsuyoshi Nagaoko (6-4, 6-0), setting up a matchup with top-seed Tiago Hayashi of the College of the Desert.
That match quickly ended when Hayashi retired from the tourney after playing just one game against Minguez, moving the Pirate freshman into the semifinals.
There, Minguez defeated another COD standout -- Alonso Leon -- 7-6 (7-5), 1-0 (retired) to advance to the finals against second-seed Zach Taylor of Ventura.
The result was more of the same as Minguez posted a 6-4, 6-2 win to claim the title and advance to next week's State Championship Tournament, where he will be seeded No. 1 from the South.
