COSTA MESA -- The twosome of Brittany Bass and Melissa Boyer are still rolling strong and thanks to their strong play at the 2009 Southern California Regionals, OCC's dynamic duo have earned a spot in this week's State Championship Tournament.
Bass and Boyer were seeded third at last weekend's SoCal Regionals, held at Orange Coast College and the Pirates pair didn't disappoint.
After a near-scare in the Round of 16 (4-6, 6-1, 6-4), Bass and Boyer rolled past No. 6 seed Danielle Bryan and Madlyn Jacobs of Grossmont, 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
But the fun stopped there as Bass and Boyer were eliminated in the semifinals against the top seeded Arina Palovnikova and Shoko Hachiya of Palomar, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
By advancing past the quarterfinals, Bass and Boyer have earned a spot in the State Championship Tournament, slated for Thursday through Saturday at Sacramento's Natomas Racquet Club.
In addition to her doubles play, Bass also earned a trip to Sacramento by advancing to the quarterfinals in singles competition.
After her straight-set win in the Round of 32, Bass topped Bakersfield's Sarena Dickerson, 6-0, 6-1 in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarters, where the No. 7 seed lost to top-seed, and eventual champion Ashley Litchfield, 6-4, 6-1.
