Women's Crew: Pirates fare well at WIRAs

SACRAMENTO -- The Orange Coast College women's crew team headed up north to compete in the 2009 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association race this past weekend and the Pirates more than held their own against some of the top four-year schools around.
In the women's Varsity 8 race, the Pirates finished fourth with a time of 7 minutes, 6.3 seconds, behind Western Washington (6:56.6), Puget Sound (6:57.2) and Seattle Pacific (7:01.9). OCC's crew included coxswain Taylor Caldecott, Alyssa Sonofsky, Alex Silva, Katy Genrich, Amanda Rogers, Katrina Hanxleden, Lisa O'Toole, Anoush Khojikian and Amber Steinbeck.
OCC's JV Women's 8 finished third with a time of 7:39.1, behind Puget Sound (7:17.8) and Willamette (7:31.5). The Pirates' boat consisted of coxswain Kelsey Mumley, Katie Kelly, Chelsea Glass, Brooke O'Brien, Brittney O'Brien, Alex Mooty, Kate Rasch, Rachel Meyer and Coryn Miller.
OCC's novice 8 finished fifth overall with a finals time of 7:12, behind Gonzaga (6:57.0), Western Washington (6:59.6), Sacramento State (7:06.9) and UC Davis (7:11.7). That crew included coxswain Chelsea Serrano, Lauren French, Brittany Somers, Brenna Aumaier, Michelle Hallock, Brittney Bebek, Laura Crosby, Kate Donovan and Bree Williston.
Up next for the Pirate women's team, they head back east to Philadelphia for the Dad Vails, beginning on Friday.
