COSTA MESA -- The 2009 men's soccer season opening on a rough note as the Orange Coast College Pirates fell to visiting Rio Hondo, 3-1, in nonconference action on Thursday.
Rio Hondo (1-0) opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Calvin Guerrero sent a long pass down field where teammate William Lopez controlled the ball, slipped past the OCC defender and ripped a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.
After just missing on a couple of early opportunities, the Pirates tied the game in the 32nd minute. Following a Rio Hondo turnover deep in its own end, Jordan Gorman fed a nice pass to Dean Regis and the freshman forward fought off a charging goalkeeper and sent the ball into the net to make it 1-1.
But the Roadrunners would take the lead for good just seven minutes later when Hector Fabian took a touch pass from Guerrero and ripped a well-placed shot into the upper-left corner to make it 2-1.
It would stay that way deep into the second half before Jonathan Ramirez picked up a goal off an OCC turnover during stoppage time.
OCC keeper Brian Rippeto notched eight saves, while Rio Hondo's Luis Godinez came up with five stops.
The Pirates return to action on Tuesday against Marymont College, beginning at 3 p.m.
