Football: Holley leads Pirates past Santa Monica
Sunday, September 06, 2009

SANTA MONICA -- Ray Holley made the most of his three-plus quarters of work, rushing for 222 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries to lead the Orange Coast College football team to a 44-28 nonconference win over Santa Monica on Saturday night at Corsair Field.

Holley, who earned second-team, all-conference honors last year, helped steady a shaky start by the Pirates with big runs and three short TD scores. He was taken out of the game with just over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter and the game well in hand.

It was painfully obvious that it was Week 1 for both teams as the Pirates and Corsairs combined for eight fumbles (six lost) and two interceptions.

However, two of Santa Monica's fumbles resulted into touchdowns as Bryce Brantley and Joe Galvez each pounced on each end zone miscue to help blow the game open.

After trailing 6-0 early, OCC ripped off the next 30 points -- highlighted by a pair of Holley touchdowns.

Quarterback Kyle Manning hit Kalii Kunitomo on a 17-yard touchdown strike to highlight his evening. The sophomore threw for 88 yards and had an interception on 6-of-21 passing.

SMC quarterback Zachary Scribner carried the Corsairs' offense, throwing for 324 yards and three touchdowns on 24-of-48 passing with an interception.

Scribner's big night was largely due to the Corsairs' inability to run the ball as OCC's defense held Santa Monica to minus-12 yards on the ground.

On defensive back Mike Patrick had six tackles and a forced fumble to lead the Pirates, who return to action on Saturday at L.A. Southwest College, beginning at 6 p.m.
