RIVERSIDE -- The winning continues for the Orange Coast College women's soccer team. Following four straight nonconference road wins, the Pirates opened things on the road with a 1-0 Orange Empire Conference win over Riverside on Tuesday.
The lone goal for the Pirates (5-0, 1-0 in OEC) came in the 31st minute when Ayla Medina took a Kayla Albin pass and beat the Tigers' goalkeeper to give OCC the lead for good.
That was all Pirates' goalkeeper Claudia Arias needed as she overcame a flu bug to notch eight saves in the shutout win.
"It's been a solid start to our season," OCC head coach Kevin Smith said. "The girls are playing well, our keeper came up with some big stops and we gave it all we had out there. Let's hope we can keep things going."
OCC finally gets to play on its own field on Friday, but the challenge won't be any easier. The Pirates will host OEC powerhouse Santiago Canyon, beginning at 3 p.m.
