Men's Soccer: Pirates rally to top Santiago Canyon in OEC opener
Tuesday, September 29, 2009

COSTA MESA -- William Munoz instantly became the most popular guy on his men's soccer team with a pair of goals late in the game to give Orange Coast a 2-1 win over visiting Santiago Canyon on Tuesday in Orange Empire Conference action.

After being outscored 13-1 over the past three games, the Pirates (4-4, 1-0 in OEC) found plenty of reasons to smile after their comeback victory over the Hawks (4-2-1, 0-1).

Trailing 1-0 after Rene Gaytan scored three minutes into the second half, OCC finally found the back of the net in the 85th minute when Antonio Gonzalez fed a nice give-and-go pass to Munoz, who beat Hawks' goalkeeper Gregg Griffin with a shot into the lower-right corner of the goal to tie things up.

Less than a minute later, Munoz was at it again. This time, a pass from Jordan Gorman found the Estancia HS graduate and the OCC freshman slipped the ball past a charging Griffin to give Coast the lead for good.

That lead was held up by Brian Rippeto, who posted eight saves to preserve the win.

OCC will return to action on Friday at Cypress, beginning at 3 p.m. Following another road game at Irvine Valley on Tuesday (3 p.m.), the Pirates will host Golden West on Friday, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m.
