FULLERTON -- After holding its first four opponents to minus-71 yards rushing, the Orange Coast College football team met its match on the ground and paid the price with a 38-10 SCFA Southern Conference loss to Fullerton on Saturday night at Cal State Fullerton.
Led by the combination of Kenny Turner (16 carries, 134 yards, TD) and Jereme Legarde (six carries, 81 yards), the Hornets (4-1, 1-0 in conference) controlled things on the line of scrimmage.
Fullerton also took advantage of some big plays on special teams to hand the Pirates their first loss of the season (4-1, 0-1). A 41-yard punt return for a touchdown by D.J. Sophus got the scoring started for the Hornets and an 85-yard kickoff return by Darryl Shine helped set up another short scoring drive, putting Fullerton up 21-3 at the half.
Ray Holley, who came into Saturday's game averaging 177 yards per game, was held to just 99 on 24 carries for the Pirates, while the passing tandem of Kyle Manning and Ethan Whitsell combined for 11-of-23 passing for 108 yards and an interception.
OCC's lone touchdown of the game came late in the fourth quarter when Brandon Allen plowed into the end zone from a yard out to wrap up the scoring for both teams.
Jimmey Keating led the OCC defense with seven tackles (four solo with 1.5 tackles for loss), while Kevin Borton added six tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
Coast returns to LeBard Stadium on Saturday against Santa Ana, beginning at 6 p.m.
