Men's Water Polo: Pirates place fifth at Citrus Tournament

GLENDORA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went 3-1 and finished fifth overall at last weekend's Citrus Tournament, beating Merced (13-5), Riverside (14-9) and Cerritos (15-9), while falling to Grossmont (10-9).
In Friday's win over Merced, Casey Sullivan and Antonio Dominguez each had three goals, while Shardad Djahangiry, Ian Kistler and Adam Thomas each added two.
More balanced from the Pirates came in Friday's loss to the fifth-ranked Griffins as Dominguez, Djahangiry and Thomas each had two goals, while Sullivan, Kyle Thorsness and Michael Baba each added a goal.
OCC, ranked No. 8 in the state, took care of ninth-ranked Riverside on Saturday behind four goals each from Sullivan and Thomas. Thorsness added three goals, Dominguez tossed in two and Djahangiry added one.
The tourney ended with a convincing win over Cerritos as Sullivan, Thomas and Djahangiry each scored three times, while Thorsness added two goals.
In goal, Mikal Marchbanks posted 34 saves throughout the weekend for the Pirates (9-5).
OCC will play at Riverside on Wednesday (4 p.m.) before heading up to San Luis Obispo for this weekend's Cuesta Tournament.
