Women's Soccer: Pirates, Tigers end in 1-1 tie
Friday, October 16, 2009

COSTA MESA -- On the verge of swallowing a 1-0 loss to visiting Riverside, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team took advantage of a penalty kick in the game's final seconds, ending the game in a 1-1 tie on Friday at OCC's LeBard Stadium.

With Erica Munoz-Hardway dribbling toward the Riverside goal, she was knocked to the ground inside the scoring box and was awarded the PK by the referee. Kallie Ryker took the shot and ripped it into the upper-right corner of the goal for her 14th goal of the season, tying the game.

Riverside's goal came in the 61st minute when midfielder Nicole Burk ripped a perfect shot from 30-yards out that landed over the outstretched fingers of OCC goalkeeper Alyssa Simon and under the crossbar, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead.

Both keepers -- Simon and RCC's Christina Beckerle -- came up with some big saves to keep the game scoreless. Simon's first same was a big one as she came up with a hard shot off the foot of Danielle Delong and Beckerle came up with a diving stop off a shot from Nancy Ortiz on a 2-on-1 break.

In the second half, the game remained scoreless as Simon's nice sliding save in the early going preserved the scoreless deadlock.

Coast (10-2-1, 6-2-1 in OEC) returns to action on Tuesday at Santiago Canyon and will return to the OCC Soccer Complex on Friday against Cypress with both matches beginning at 3 p.m.
