FRESNO -- It was a heck of a run, literally, for the Orange Coast College men's and women's cross country teams as they each took home second-place trophies at the 2009 California Community College Athletic Association State Meet on Saturday, held at Fresno's Woodward Park. The OCC women, led by a third-place run by sophomore standout Kimone Hewitt, finished with 80 points overall, topped only by eventual state champion Glendale's 43. Hewitt, who led the way for five top-30 finishers for the Pirates, finished the three-mile course with a time of 18 minutes, 6 seconds. Hillary Labelle was 16th overall with a time of 18:53, while Jane Kerner (22nd, 19:00), Andrea Gayton-Jacob (23rd, 19:06) and Sara Toberty (28th, 19:17) complete the scoring runners for Coast. Other finishers for the Pirates include Andrea Guerra (19:38) and Margaret McDuffee (19:59). Glendale, which had three top-10 finishes and five top-20 finishes was led by state champion Nina Moore, who crossed the finish line with a time of 17:48.
On the men's side, it was another 1-2 battle between state's top two teams as the Pirates finished with 133 points, topped only by San Bernardino Valley's defending state champion score of 67. Sophomore Russell Westphall was Coast's top runner, completing the four-mile course with a 13th-place time of 20:42. All four remaining runners that scored for Coast cracked the top-50, including Eric Dyson (24th, 20:56), Sergio Olivarrias (29th, 20:59), Pedro Saucedo (31st, 21:00) and Jake Dawson (44th, 21;11). Other Coast times include Francisco Baquero (21:25) and Jorge Torres (22:06). SB Valley returned to the top of the state, despite having no top-10 finishes. However, consistency was the key for the victors, who had all five runners finish in the top-20. Hartnell College's Daniel Tapia won the individual state title with a time of 20:05.
