SAN MATEO - Four-time defending state champion Orange Coast took three of the top five spots on the women's side to claim the team title at the CSM Crystal Springs Invitational while the men took runner-up position in a race held on Saturday morning. Sophomore Gaby Santana continued her run toward a state championship by winning the women's race in 18:10, a comfortable 18 seconds ahead of runner-up Emmy Barr of Sierra. Fourth and fifth places also belonged to the Pirates as Jewel Buter was next across the line in 18:45 while Araceli Huerta took fifth in 19:00. Before the top 10 were across the line, the Pirates had already posted their winning score of 26 points. Elda Hernandez was the 7th finisher with a time of 19:01 before Rebecca Powell wrapped up the title by taking 9th position in 19:30. Samantha Cadwell (14th, 19:38) and Kelly Oelschlager (17th, 19:46) were the two displaced scorers for the Bucs. The Coast men met a formidable foe for the one of the few times this season as Hartnell edged the Pirates by a 52-57 point total. Kellen Acosta took fifth to lead the way for the Pirates in a time of 21:32. Patrick and Shaun Fitzgerald were 9th and 10th, respectively, with times of 21:50 and 21:51 to help the Bucs keep pace. Jesus Ramirez was next across in 15th position with a time of 22:19 while Jesus Salazar closed things down for the Pirates in 18th position in 22:31. Pedro Lopez (23rd, 22:45) and Mike Arciniaga (30th, 22:51) were the two displaced runners for the Coast men. With all of their prep races out of the way, the Pirates begin their march toward state glory in earnest in two weeks with the Orange Empire Conference Championships at Irvine Park on Saturday, October 29.
