IRVINE - Sophomore Gaby Santana got the postseason off and running in grand style as she led the Coast women to a near-perfect score of 16 and the 2005 Orange Empire Conference women's cross country championship, Saturday morning at Irvine Regional Park.
The Coast men battled through injuries to three of its top runners and took second with 54 points behind Riverside, which posted a winning total of 40 points.
Santana paced an Orange Coast contingency that claimed the first four spots with a time of 19:29. Jewel Butler ran a stellar race and was second at 19:41 before Aracel Huerta and Samantha Cadwell were not far behind at 20:03 and 20:05, respectively.
The chance at a perfect score came down to a sprint between Elda Hernandez and Amy Gilsen of Riverside. The two came to the line neck-and-neck, but Gilsen edged Hernandez by a second to foil the Coast attempts at a perfect tally of 15 points.
Rebecca Powell and Kelly Oelschlager were the two displaced scorers with Powell taking 10th at 20:44 and Oelschlager just one spot and three seconds behind her teammate.
Patrick Fitzgerald led the way for the men, finishing 6th with a time of 21:53 over the 6,450 meter course. Kellen Acosta took 10th and 11th, respectively, while Shaun Fitzgerald and Jesus Salazar completed the scoring with another back-to-back finish in 13th and 14th.
Mike Arciniaga took 16th overall in one displaced scoring position while Pedro Lopez claimed the second in 18th position. Nick St. Andre took 20th overall to put the Pirates with eight finishers in the top 20.
The Pirates will look to defend their regional titles this weekend at UC San Diego with the first race starting at 9 a.m.
