Orange Coast to Open State Tournament Play Against Fresno City
Monday, December 05, 2005

COSTA MESA – Top-ranked and undefeated Orange Coast (22-0) will open up play in the 2005 California Community Colleges Commission on Athletics Women’s Volleyball Championships presented by U.S. Bank against Fresno City College (20-6) on Friday, December 9 in the Selland Arena at 6 p.m.
The Pirates, the top seed out of the South and the #1-ranked team in the final coaches poll, cruised through the two-match regional playoffs with three-game sweeps of #16-seeded Mt. San Antonio (30-22, 30-22, 31-29) and #9-seeded Victor Valley (30-13, 30-16, 30-16). The Bucs kept alive their 66-game winning streak that covers the entire season to partner with an unblemished mark in capturing the Santa Ana College Tournament back in September.
The Rams, the 10th-seeded team out of the North, were pushed to the limit in their second round regional match, erasing a 2-0 deficit to post a 19-30, 24-30, 37-35, 30-27, 15-12 win at second-seeded Sacramento City. The Rams also went on the road during the first round of the playoffs to upset #7-seeded DeAnza, 30-18, 30-24, 32-30.
Orange Coast is making its first state tournament appearance since making back-to-back showings in 1991 and 1992. The Pirates took third place in the latter, posting a 2-2 record in their latest appearance. The program owns three state titles, won in 1978, 1980 and 1982. Fresno also made its last state appearance in 1992, dropping matches to San Bernardino Valley and West Valley.
The winner of the first round match will be up against either West Valley (22-5) or L.A. Pierce (21-2). Winners will not play until Saturday morning at 10 a.m., while the losers will be right back on the courts at 8 p.m. The tournament is an eight-team, double-elimination contest to wrap up on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The championship match will also be broadcast via internet radio on COA Sports Radio with Eric Montgomery on the call.
