COSTA MESA - When a community college volleyball team wins a state title, goes undefeated and wins 73 straight games in the process, there's going to be a lot of demand by four-year schools for the sophomores on that squad. Such was the case for the state champion Orange Coast College Pirates, whose four sophomores, pictured, from left to right -- Samantha Connor, Brittney Ray, Caitlin Parker and Christina Witt -- have all committed to four-year universities next year. "It's a great feeling to get a call from a player who is excited about committing to a four-year school," OCC head coach Chuck Cutenese said. Connor, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker from Anaheim (Katella H.S.), will be attending Wright State University in the fall. She racked up 186 kills and 58 blocks, on her way to first-team, All-Orange Empire Conference honors and a 2005 All-State, All-Tournament Team selection. She finished eighth on OCC's all-time, single-season total for blocks. Ray, a 5-7 outside hitter from Colorado Springs, Colo. (Rampart H.S.), will be moving on to Trevecca Nazarene University in Tennessee. She amassed 205 kills, 305 digs (eighth-best, all-time, single-season) and 43 aces (No. 9 all-time), also earning first-team, All-OEC, and All-State honors. Parker, a 5-7 setter from Novato (Novato H.S.), will compete at Cal Baptist University in the fall. She paced the offense with 768 assists, third-best single-season mark in OCC history, as well as 95 digs and 34 aces, earning first-team, All-OEC and first-team, All-State along the way. Witt, a 5-10 outside hitter from Wildomar (Elsinore H.S.) will attend Chapman University in the fall. At Coast, she had 33 kills, 11 aces, 47 digs and four blocks in 2005.
