Cross country squads hang tough at CSUF meet

BREA - Competing against some of the best four-year schools and clubs around, the Orange Coast College cross country squads left a very positive impression at the Cal State Fullerton Season Opener Meet on Saturday at Carbon Canyon Park.
On the women's side, the Pirates placed ninth overall with 236 points. Leading the way on the 5K course was Elda Hernandez, who finished tied for 13th with a time of 19 minutes, 0.4 seconds. Close behind Hernandez was Erendira Uriostegui, who placed 19th with a 19:09.5. Rounding out the times for the women include Kelly Oelschlager (20:13.7), Kristin Glen (20:50.4), Kim Jennings (20:51.5), Claire Fleming (21:41.6) and Natalie Gonzalez (22:33.6).
Concordia University topped the overall team standings with 88 points. Loyola Marymount (113) and Cal Coast (140) rounded out the top-three.
On the men's side, the Pirates finished 13th with 378 points. Leading the way for the Bucs was Ernesto Castaneda, who finished the 8K course with a time of 27:52.6. Teammates Alfonso Silvas (28:26.4) and Nate Mouzis (28:38) finished in the top-100 against some tough competition. Other OCC times included Nick St. Andre (29:08.1), Travis Foerster (29:17.7), Sean Connor (29:45.5), Erik Clark (31:06.8), Eric Pettit (32:05.1), Patrick Riley (32:58.6), Alex Drum (33:12.1), Hector Riestra (34:21.9) and Mario Guereca (41:51.8).
Again, Concordia took the top team spot with 44 points, while Cal Coast (104) and Cal Poly Pomona (118) placed second and third respectively.
The Pirates return to competition on Friday in Antelope Valley at the Southern California Preview. The gun goes off at 9 a.m.
