COMPTON -- It didn't take the Compton Tartars long to realize who Kekoa Crowell's favorite target was on Saturday. It did, however, take a while to figure out a way to do something about it. Sophomore wide receiver Damola Adeniji hauled in three touchdown passes from Crowell and the Orange Coast College Pirates earned an impressive 26-0 road win over Compton in nonconference action. Crowell and backup quarterback Chris Debowski combined for 12-for-24 passing for 95 yards, 61 of those yards accumulated by five Adeniji receptions. Again led by another dominating defensive performance, the Pirates clamped down on the Tartars, holding them to just one first down for the first half and under 100 yards of total offense for the game. Three turnovers (two interceptions, one muffed punt) proved too much to overcome for the Tartars (0-2) as early-season mistakes turned into Pirate points. With a workman-like effort from freshman tailback Andrew Banks (19 carries, 73 yards), the Pirates were able to control the game with first downs (13) and clock management (32:16). Coming up with big plays was also important for OCC's success, converting 6 of 18 third-down conversions, while the defense held Compton to 0-of-9 in the same category. The Crowell-to-Adeniji touchdown show began midway through the first quarter when the twosome hooked up on a 14-yard TD strike on a 3rd-and-7, giving OCC a 7-0 lead following a successful Brock Jaramillo extra point. Early in the second quarter the two played pitch and catch again, this time for a 26-yard TD strike to give the Pirates a 14-0 advantage. Following a Jaramillo 20-yard field goal, a Compton mistake on special teams netted more Pirate points. A bad fourth-down snap over the head of punter Andrew Aguila forced the Tartar kicker to boot the rolling ball out of his own end zone for a safety to make it 19-0, giving OCC a safety for the second week in a row. The Pirates put a capper on the scoring following a muffed Compton punt gave OCC the ball on the Tartar 13-yard-line. Two plays later, Crowell hooked up with Adeniji for a 10-yard TD for the eventual final score of the game. OCC will take on Palomar on Saturday, beginning at 5 p.m. at OCC's LeBard Stadium.
