Women's volleyball sweeps away Mt. SAC
Friday, September 15, 2006

COSTA MESA - While the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team continues to learn with each nonconference match, the results continue to shine.
Led by 13 kills and 15 digs from sophomore Kiwi Winkler, the Pirates swept past Mt. San Antonio College, 30-18, 30-18, 30-27 on Friday night at the Peterson Gym, improving to 4-0 for the season.
Jacqi Reed added eight kills for the Pirates - winners of 30 straight matches - and Jill Sorem added 13 digs to add to the defensive support.
OCC's setters Chelsea Spadaro and Angela Roberts combined for 29 assists.
The Pirates jumped out to a 10-0 lead in Game 1 and never looked back as the Mounties (2-2) struggled to get anything going early on.
Mt. SAC sophomore Amber Herrera led the Mounties with 10 kills and 15 assists.
In Game 2, again the Pirates jumped out to a big lead early on and were never threatened by the Mounties. Winkler had four kills in the game, while Spadaro and Reed each added a pair of their own.
Coach Chuck Cutenese played some of the subs in Game 3 and they never saw a deficit as they held their own against Mt. SAC's starters. Winkler stayed in and pounded out seven kills in the finale.
OCC will look to defend their title at the Santa Ana Tournament, which kicks off on Saturday morning against East L.A., beginning at 9 a.m.
