SAN LUIS OBISPO - It was well worth the trip for the Orange Coast College men's and women's cross country teams.
At the Pepsi Value Cuesta Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, both the men's and women's teams returned home as team champs. The men's squad pulled out a one-point win over College of the Canyons (57-58), while on the women's side, OCC's 29 points topped the rest of the field with Glendale taking second with 35.
The key to the men's win was their depth as five runners cracked the top-20, led by Martin Bernard, who finished sixth overall with a time of 22 minutes, 49 seconds. Teammate Ernesto Castaneda was close behind for a seventh-place time of 22:57, while the other three top-20 finishes included Nathaniel Mouzis (13th, 23:12), Nick St. Andre (23:37) and Travis Foerster (19th, 23:44). Other OCC times included Alfonso Silvas (25th, 24:26), Erik Lopez (29th, 24:30) and Sean Connor (35th, 24:54).
For the women, all six runners cracked the top-25 and the finished in the top-12. Elda Hernandez was the top OCC runner with a second-place time of 19:21. Erendira Uriostegui finished third with a 19:46. Other Pirate times included Kimberly Jennings (10th, 21:28), Kristin Glen (11th, 21:33), Claire Fleming (12th, 21:39) and Natalie Gonzalez (25th, 23:05).
Both teams will be back in action much closer to home on Saturday when they host several other schools in the Orange Coast Classic, beginning at 9 a.m.
