COSTA MESA - The Orange Coast College women's water polo team didn't want to become a part of Riverside's history, but the No. 1 team in the state didn't ask.
With a dominating second-quarter performance, the defending state champion Tigers notched their 36th straight win with a 10-5 triumph over the host Pirates, tying the all-time school record for consecutive wins by any sports team. Teresa Fleming had a game-high four goals, while Kelsie Arnold added a pair of her own for the Tigers (11-0, 2-0 in the Orange Empire Conference). OCC was sparked by a four-goal performance by Ashley Maher, while Annie Le added a single tally of her own. Pirate goalie Marilyn Stowell had 11 saves. The Pirates came out strong early on and trailed only by a single goal after the first quarter before the depth and talent of the Tigers began to take over the contest. "This is a work in progress for this team," head coach Anthony Iacopetti said. "The team is growing with each contest. As for today, I was very pleased with how we started. That was definitely the bright spot of today." But Riverside outscored OCC 6-2 in the second quarter and never looked back. OCC will return to action on Sept. 27 at Cypress, beginning at 4 p.m.
