Pirates sweep Southwestern; OEC play on horizon
Wednesday, September 27, 2006

COSTA MESA - The final tune-up for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team has been completed and the Orange Empire Conference is right around the corner.
Jacqi Reed had 12 kills, while Kiwi Winkler (pictured left) added 10 kills and 20 digs to lead the undefeated Pirates to a 30-22, 30-13, 30-17 win over visiting Southwestern on Wednesday night.
Winners of 33 straight, the Pirates (7-0) know they must turn their collective games up several notches as Orange Empire Conference play gets underway on Friday night at Cypress, beginning at 6 p.m.
Jennifer Chiffer added eight kills for OCC, while Ashlee Moon contributed eight digs and Chelsea Spadaro dished out 25 assists.
Sarah Gawalis led the Jaguars (2-3) with six kills, while Cristina Gonzales chipped in five.
OCC used its size and athletic advantages throughout the match as Reed and Chiffer hit repeated kills on the Jags' defense early in Game 1.
The Pirates led by as many as nine (21-12) and, despite a modest 7-2 run by Southwestern, they never were threatened as OCC took the opener behind a strong finish by Winkler.
Aces were wild in game 2 as Reed, Moon and Jill Sorem each picked up service aces to pace a 20-8 Pirate advantage in an easy OCC win.
Game 3 was more of the same as the Pirates overcame an early Game 3 deficit to cruise to victory, led by four Reed kills early in the game and a pair of kills by Winkler and Jessica Roy late in the game.
Following Friday's game at Cypress, the Pirates return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday, Oct. 4 when they host Santa Ana. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
