COSTA MESA - Unfortunately for the Pirates, there would be no second-half magic this time. Despite a nice rally to tie, the men's soccer team saw a pair of late Irvine Valley goals ruin their plans as the visiting Lasers prevailed, 3-1, in Orange Empire Conference action on Friday. The loss drops the Pirates to 1-3 in conference, 5-6-1 overall, while the Lasers improve to 3-0-1 in the OEC, 7-2-2 overall. IVC got on the scoreboard first when a long pass by Darren Whitty was misplayed by an OCC defender, leaving a breakaway opportunity for Dillon McEwin, who cashed in to give the Lasers a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute. In the 15th minute of the second half, OCC managed to even things up. Laser midfielder Daniel Bridgman was given a red card for intentionally knocking a shot away from his team's goal with his hand. The referee awarded a penalty to the Pirates and Matt Schirmer made the most of the opportunity, beating goalkeeper Jesus Olivera with a low shot into the left corner of the goal. However, IVC regained the lead 12 minutes later when a Whitty corner kick bounced through a mass of soccer humanity and onto the foot of IVC teammate Ryan Borunda, who slipped a shot past Pirate goalkeeper Alex Roberts and into the net for a 2-1 advantage. With nearly the entire OCC team on the offensive, a long clearing pass by Laser Scott Kea was retrieved by forward Luis Miguel, who worked a shot past a charging Roberts to cap off the scoring in the 88th minute. Roberts finished with eight saves for the Pirates, as did Olivera for Irvine Valley. OCC returns to action on Tuesday at Golden West, beginning at 6 p.m.
