Women's volleyball bounces back, sweeps Riverside
Friday, October 13, 2006

COSTA MESA - The no more streaks of any kind to worry about, the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team went back to work and swept away Riverside, 30-17, 30-22, 30-28 on Friday in Orange Empire Conference action.
Rebounding nicely from Wednesday's four-game loss to Golden West, the Pirates (11-1, 4-1 in conference) were led by Kiwi Winkler's 18 kills and 16 digs. Jacqi Reed (pictured far right with Jessica Roy, 10) added 14 kills and Ashlee Moon chipped in with 13 digs. Pacing the offense was Chelsea Spadaro, who dished out 35 assists.
Riverside, which came into tonight's match ranked 23rd in the state, was led by Mariza Figueroa with 14 kills and 15 digs. Lindsey Whitlock chipped in 10 kills, Jasmin Rivas added 19 digs and Sara Baker contributed 33 assists.
OCC took control of Game 1 with a 12-2 run, turning an 11-10 lead into a 23-12 advantage as Winkler came out swinging early and often.
Despite a solid defensive effort by the Tigers, the top-ranked Pirates simply had too much firepower as they jumped out to a 17-8 lead in Game 2 and never looked back.
Riverside hung tough in Game 3 and led 26-23 before Reed, Walker and the rest of the Pirates fought back.
A pair of Reed kills sparked a 3-0 run to tie things up at 26 and, after Riverside scored twice in a row to take a 28-26 advantage, several late mistakes doomed the Tigers.
Two bad passes and a block by OCC's Jennifer Chiffer and Spadaro gave OCC a 29-28 lead. One more Riverside errant hit later, the match was over.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday when they host Irvine Valley, beginning at 7 p.m.
