COSTA MESA - After a disappointing 2-2 tie at Saddleback last week and a lackluster first half of play on Tuesday, the Orange Coast College women's soccer team upped the intensity and prevailed 2-0 against Santa Ana in Orange Empire Conference action at the OCC Soccer Complex.
Following a scoreless first half of play, the Pirates (9-5-1, 6-3-1 in conference) took the lead for good in the 51st minute. Ashley Boyer weaved her way through a pair of SAC defenders and ripped a shot on goal that was saved by Dons' goalkeeper Alexiz Villanueva. The ball bounced off of Villanueva and onto the foot of Loren Kortizija (pictured left), who deposited the ball into the nearly-empty net for a 1-0 OCC advantage.
The Pirates capped off their scoring run in the 74th minute when a Kelli Fresenius corner kick was deflected into the net by teammate Nicole Huff.
Villanueva finished the game with 12 saves, while OCC keeper Katie Johnson stopped all three shots that came her way, including an aggressive charging kick save in the first half that kept the game scoreless.
OCC had a pair of nice scoring chances in the first half, but shots from Fresenius and Allie Nelson banked harmlessly off the goal's crossbar.
The Pirates will look to extend their three-game unbeaten streak on Friday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m.
