An all-campus gathering was held last Friday to brainstorm and gather input regarding whether or not to hold Summer School 2010, and to obtain input as to cost containment ideas for June-July-August 2010.
There were 36 attendees: Barbara Bond, Joe Poshek, Kevin Ballinger, Paul Asim, Rich Pagel, John Fawcett, Mary Roda, Kristin Clark, Frank Fonseca, Hue Pham, Blade Gillissen, Torii Ott, Hal Golson, Rodney Foster, Kris Cutting, Allan Herman, Steve Tamanaha, Richard Hutchison, Jose Vilchez-Azcono, Bernardo Cervantes, Juani Funez-Gonzalez, Arabian Morgan, Robin O’Connor, Glen Profeta, Andrea Stone, Valerie Hayward, Irini Vallera-Rickerson, Michael Mandelkern, Melissa Berta, Steve Drum, Mayra Novasky for Vickie Hay, Denise Cabanel-Bleuer, Beating Keith, Michael Slobom, Madjid Niroumand, and Julie Clevenger.
After much discussion and input from Faculty, Staff and Students, the following recommendations were made to and approved by College Council on 10.27.09:
- Summer School in some form should be offered in 2010
- Our target population are our OCC students and students at GWC and CCC
- Limit summer session to one start date only - Summer School, regardless of length (4 – 6 – or 8 week) should all start on the same day if possible (the exception is the 4 week summer session which may require a later start date to end in July)
- Courses should be limited to 8am – 12pm and 7pm – 11pm to save on energy costs (do not offer courses during the heat of the day)
- The OCC, GWC, and CCC should work together to coordinate as much as possible non-duplicative courses and schedule courses that complement, not compete, with each other
- There are OCC allied health, physical education (team training/liabilities), adaptive PE, and technology program and certificate programs that require summer offerings to maintain their program timelines and effectiveness
- The per-student-cap should be limited to taking up to 7 units with the extra unit to accommodate labs (exceptions by petition through Counseling)
- Consider not offering any courses in August to provide energy conservation savings
- Take advantage of classrooms in the Computer Center
- Enact the 4/10 employee work plan (turn off air conditioning Thursday evening and resume air on Monday mornings)
- Move staff to core buildings and completely close some buildings if possible
- Limitation of food services due to building improvements
Interim President Denise Whittaker will present the recommendations at the District Budget Advisory meeting this Friday.
