Grey's unique series of 21 life-sized paintings, the “Sacred Mirrors,” takes the viewer on a divine journey by examining the body, mind and spirit. The “Sacred Mirrors” present the physical and subtle anatomy of an individual in the context of cosmic, biological and technological evolution. Begun in 1979, Grey spent 10 years completing the series.

The large format art book, “Sacred Mirrors: The Visionary Art of Alex Grey,” has been translated into five languages and has sold over 100,000 copies.

“Sacred Mirrors” received critical acclaim. "Grey's ‘Sacred Mirrors’ are portraits of the human being in a universal sense, attempting to address every aspect of the body and spirit," said Marcia Tucker, founder and former director of The New Museum in New York City.

Walter Hopps, senior curator for the Guggenheim Museum, describes Grey’s work as “some of the most beautifully refined imagist work in the country today."

High Times Magazine calls Grey “America’s foremost psychedelic artist,” and best-selling author Deepak Chopra said, "The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors will bring you face to face with your soul and move you to a new level of enlightenment."

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors, CoSM, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building an enduring sanctuary of visionary art and providing a public exhibition of the “Sacred Mirrors” and the most outstanding works of mystical art by Alex Grey.

The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors was open in New York City for five years until CoSM closed its doors last year. The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors recently acquired a 40-acre interfaith retreat center as a permanent home in New Hamburg, NY, 65 miles north of New York City. The exhibition of Alex Grey's “Sacred Mirrors” collection will reopen in spring following renovations of the existing brick exhibition hall.

Grey was an instructor in Artistic Anatomy and Figure Sculpture for 10 years at New York University, and he now teaches courses in Visionary Art with his artist wife, Allyson, at The Open Center in New York City; Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado; the California Institute of Integral Studies; and Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, New York. The couple reside in New York City with their daughter, Zena.
