Vinta Oviatt | Vinta Oviatt, a librarian and faculty member at OCC for the past 12 years, has been appointed the college’s new Student Learning Outcomes and Assessment Coordinator (SLOAC).
As OCC’s SLOAC, Vinta will be responsible for coordinating SLOs (student learning outcomes) and assessment activities critical to the college’s accreditation, including staff development activities to help faculty and staff complete the process. The college recently completed SLOs for all courses and programs and is now in the process of assessing those learning outcomes.
As chair of the SLOAC Advisory Committee, Vinta will play a key role in the implementation of a sustainable three-year cycle of student learning outcomes and assessment, eventually linking them to program review and institutional strategic planning.
Vinta is assuming her new duties this week. She will continue to serve as the Library’s Instructional Services Librarian and teach the Library 100 online class. However, part-time librarian Seth Daughterty will take over her other duties. Vinta will keep her office in Room 217 in the library, and her phone number will remain the same, x21507.
Selection of the SLOAC was made by a committee of faculty members who recommended finalists to Interim President Denise Whittaker, who chose Vinta to fill the new position.
Vinta is well prepared for her new role as SLOAC. In 2007 she attended the state senate’s “SLO Coordinators Workshop,” as well as a “Student Learning Outcomes Workshop in 2005.
She has 32 years of experience as a librarian in public, academic and special libraries. At OCC, Vinta has focused on instruction, especially information competency, which requires setting outcomes and assessing competency. For the past 12 years, she has written a weekly column on literary competency for Coast to Coast. Her final column appears in this issue.
