Staff of Orange Coast College’s student run-newspaper, the Coast Report, won 13 awards, including general excellence for newspaper and first- and second-place prizes for broadcast video journalism, at the Journalism Association of Community College SoCal Conference Saturday.
The first place video, “Students Storm the Capital,” was produced by photo editor Peter Bicknell, online editor Kevin Warn and former managing editor Fernando Vazquez. The second place video, “Producing the Paper,” was produced by Bicknell, Vazquez and former multi-media student Rachel Valentine.
The general excellence award is the most coveted honor presented to student newspapers that meet a high standard throughout the publication, according to advisor Cathy Werblin.
Other award winners include former editor-in-chief Britney Barnes, who won third place for front page layout for broadsheet.
Several current Coast Report editors received honorable mentions in the on-the-spot writing competition at JACC.
Managing and sports editor Tony Lee received an honorable mention for sports writing, features editor Cristina Ramos won for feature writing, and distractions editor Lucas Vocos won for newswriting.
Warn also received an honorable mention in the feature photo competition, and Bicknell received honorable mentions in feature and sports photo competitions.
Former Coast Report staff writers Mariam Nassery and Justin Chalupa received honorable mentions in the opinion story category, and former staff writer Farren Benjamin won an honorable mention for her profile feature story on OCC coach Olga Connolly.
