A reception for John Upton’s “Jungle Road” exhibit, on display in the Art Center Gallery through Nov. 23rd, will be Monday, Nov. 9th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Art Center.
Upton, who retired from OCC in 1998 after 33 years as a professor of photography, also served as department chair during a time of unprecedented growth when the department grew from 100 to 1,500 students. By 1975, OCC’s photography program was the largest program in a public institution in the United States.
While he was at OCC, Upton also was a visiting lecturer at Cal State Fullerton from 1975 to 1990, California Institute of the Arts, Valencia (1983-1984), and UCLA in 1976.
Upton’s photographs are included in the collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and M.I.T. He is the co-author of the college textbook, “Photography,” which is now in its 8th edition with more than a million copies in print.
Since his retirement, Upton has been making the transition from traditional photographic technology to digital imaging. His latest project, “Jungle Road,” was completed in Hawaii. The images were inspired by music, including the chamber music of Bartok, Hindemith and Webern.
