Accounting and Bookkeeping programs are designed to prepare people for a variety of occupations, ranging from bookkeepers and accounting clerks to professional accountants with specialized skills. Bookkeeping and accounting clerk programs are usually one year in length and are offered at community colleges and vocational schools. Students learn to apply bookkeeping methods to the computing and recording of numerical data using various forms and business machines. Short-term programs in income tax preparation and auditing are also available.

Accounting programs range from two-year associate degree programs offered at community colleges and vocational schools to bachelor's degree and graduate level programs at colleges and universities. Students learn accounting principles and theories and the application of this knowledge to the analysis of financial records and the preparation of financial reports. Programs may offer options for concentrated study in specialized fields in accounting such as managerial accounting, auditing, or tax accounting. Many programs are designed to provide the necessary background for taking the Certified Public Accountant examination required for licensing by the State Board of Accountancy.
