English

English and Literature programs intend to teach reading and writing skills, and to put students in touch with what has been thought and written in the English language. Many English majors take courses to be certified as primary or secondary school teachers; others go on to graduate school, hoping to become teachers in colleges or universities. Nearly all four-year colleges and universities offer bachelor's degree programs in English and/or specialties such as communication studies and creative writing. Many also offer master's degree and doctoral programs. Most community colleges offer the first two years of English degree requirements, which can be transferred to four- year institutions.
