Requirements for Receiving Veterans’ Educational Benefits

Every veteran, servicepersons, or eligible dependent must contact the Veterans Certifying Official in the Records Office located on the first floor in Watson Hall in order to complete the appropriate required paperwork.

When applying for benefits, the Veteran should bring a copy of his/her DD-214 (Notice of Separation).  Reservists may provide his/her NOBE (Notice of Basic Eligibility) or DD-214.

Veteran Administration regulations require each eligible person to have a specific academic goal, a plan of classes developed with a counselor, and to make satisfactory progress towards that goal. Failure to do so may result in termination of veteran educational benefits.

Veterans and active duty service persons are eligible for priority registration.

It will be the responsibility of the veteran or eligible dependent to adhere to the regulations of the Veterans Administration and Orange Coast College policies.

Veterans, Active Duty Military and Credit for Military Training

Orange Coast College recognizes and grants academic credit to veterans for eligible military service and training credit completed in the armed forces. Orange Coast College reserves the right to evaluate and grant credit based on the academic policies established at OCC. Veterans may apply for evaluation of this credit by presenting authentic military service and training records to the Veteran’s Clerk, including a copy of discharge papers. Awarded credit will be applied once the student has completed 12 units at Orange Coast College. Credit earned for military training may count toward satisfying requirements for the Associate Degrees; Military credit awarded may not transfer to other colleges. Veterans are advised to check with the college they plan to transfer to for information regarding awarding military credit. Under no circumstances will OCC graduate a student who has not completed 12 units of Orange Coast College coursework

·   Evaluation of Military Transcripts

Military transcripts will be evaluated by the VA Certifying Official in Admissions and Records at the request of the student upon petition of a degree or certificate.

ACE (American Council on Education) recommendations are used for determining awarded elective units.  Course equivalency and/or course substitutions must be requested through APC.  Military transcripts may be used for AA-Option 1 and AS, only.
