Film Studies

Film Studies program are designed to provide skills in still and motion-picture camera use and maintenance, and all aspects of film exposure and development. Some programs also emphasize design principles and the history of photography and/or cinema. Film Studies programs are designed to prepare people as free-lance photographers, studio photographers, graphic arts photographers, and motion picture photographers. Many two- and four-year colleges and universities offer Film Studies programs. There is much local variation in program content. Two-year associate degree programs offered by Community Colleges may concentrate on photographic techniques, while graduate programs offered by universities and institutes may focus on advanced photographic technology and theory. Each program typically emphasizes only one area (photographic journalism, fine arts, industrial, video, etc.) Photographic Arts programs usually are offered through art and journalism departments, but some universities and institutes have separate departments devoted to film, television, and photography programs. The University of California and the state college system concentrate on film studies, cinematography, motion pictures and television as majors related to photography. With proper research and advisement at selected UC or CSU campuses, students will find related majors.
