Division, Library, Student Services Senator Elections
To see the list of names and requests received by the Academic Senate office, scroll down to "CURRENT LIST OF SUBMITTED NOMINEE NAMES & REQUESTS FOR SENATE OFFICE-RUN ELECTIONS" (last section of this page)

There are nine Division Senators (one for each academic division), a Library Senator, and a Student Services Senators. These eleven Senators serve 3-year terms, and the terms are staggered, so not all elections occur during the same year.

The election of these Senators is handled by the divisions or constituencies that they represent, unless there is a request for the Academic Senate Office to handle the election.

DIVISION OR SENATE-RUN?

Per Article 1, Section 3 of the Academic Senate by-laws, each division is responsible for conducting its own election to choose its FT Faculty Senate representative.  However, per Article 6 of the by-laws, the division may request that the Academic Senate conduct the election.

b. The Senate will conduct elections for division Senators if the division requests the assistance of the Senate. Otherwise, the division will conduct its own elections and report the results to the Senate in February. The Senate President shall report to the Senate the results of division elections during the President’s report/announcements at the next Senate meeting.

BEST PRACTICES

Presently, there are no written policies or procedures that outline the steps any division FT Faculty group is required to follow to elect their Division Senator.  Some suggestions to follow for best practices and transparency include:

  • The current Division Senator provides a current and accurate list of all FT Faculty email addresses within the division, organized by department (instructional area) to the Academic Senate Staff Aide, Allison Paine at apaine@occ.cccd.edu  and at occacademicsenate@occ.cccd.edu.
  • The current Division Senator informs all divisional FT Faculty members that there is an open position for election.
    • If the current FT Faculty Division Senator wishes to nominate her/himself, s/he can consider including that information in the communication, while, at the same time, encouraging others to nominate themselves.
  • Any FT Faculty members (including the current FT Faculty Division Senator) wishing to nominate themselves need to notify the Academic Senate office at apaine@occ.cccd.edu AND occacademicsenate@occ.cccd.edu of their intention to serve and represent their Division by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 12, 2014.
  • All nominee names received by the Academic Senate office will be posted on this page. If an individual submits her/his name to the Senate office and does not see her/his name posted after two business days, that individual should contact the Senate office.
  • The current Division Senator communicates the election procedure that faculty will use within the division to the Academic Senate office.
  • Take steps to ensure that Senator elections be a FT Faculty-led and organized process.  The use of administrators in Senator elections, while often convenient, may lead to perceptions of unnecessary oversight.
