A lavish production of "The Nutcracker" will be staged this weekend at Orange Coast College by Orange County's Festival Ballet Theatre.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 20-22) in OCC's Robert B. Moore Theatre. Curtain is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

The Festival Ballet Theatre will team with the children of the Southland Ballet Academy to offer the production. It will be the company's 14th annual production of "The Nutcracker."

This year's production will feature a live orchestra.

Located in Fountain Valley, the Festival Ballet Theatre is headed by artistic director, Salwa Rizkalla. Rizkalla received her diploma in classical ballet after studying for nine years with Russian ballet masters of the Bolshoi and Leningrad Schools of Ballet. She has performed in solo roles in numerous ballets, including "Giselle," "Swan Lake," "The Nutcracker," "Les Sylphides," "Prince Igor," "Daphnis and Chloe," "Don Juan" and "Fountain of Bakhchisarai."

Rizkalla founded the Southland Ballet Academy, the official school of the Festival Ballet Theatre, in 1983. The Festival Ballet Theatre was formed in 1988.

Advance reserved tickets for the concert, priced at $20, are on sale in OCC's Community Education Ticket Office, located adjacent to the college's library. The office is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Advance discount tickets, priced at $17, are available to OCC students, senior citizens and children under 12. Tickets are available on-line at

Tickets, if available, will be sold at the door for $22 for adults and $18 for children under 12.
