OCC’S SPEECH TEAM WINS FALL CHAMPIONS TOURNEY

Orange Coast College's speech and debate team captured the Fall Champions Tournament held last weekend at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.

Forty-two colleges and universities took part in the tourney, which ran Friday through Sunday (Dec. 2-4) at Mt. SAC. OCC's squad grabbed 20 trophies, and had 12 finalists in the competition.

OCC earned the overall sweepstakes and novice sweepstakes trophies.

OCC's Kristin Douglas captured gold medals for the Pirates in programmed oral interpretation and novice prose. Shaw Davari won a gold in junior duo interpretation and a silver in junior poetry. Jeremiah Pfaff grabbed a gold in junior parliamentary speaking and a bronze in junior parliamentary debate. He was a finalist in junior speech to entertain and junior informative speaking.

Allan Paine was first in junior duo interpretation and third in novice parliamentary debate. Christine Nguyen was first in novice poetry, and Erica Hagaman finished first in novice impromptu. Kara Kessener was a gold medalist in cultural artifact. Roger Wills garnered a first-place award in novice informative speaking.

Tim Zimmer nabbed a silver medal in open drama and was a finalist in open duo interpretation. Rachel Borovay was a silver medalist in novice persuasion and a finalist in junior prose. Sam Bustamante captured a second-place award in junior drama and was a finalist in junior prose. Trenton Smith was a silver medalist in cultural artifact.

Chris Mills copped a bronze award in junior prose and was a finalist in programmed oral interpretation. Erica Widmer finished third in novice poetry and was a finalist in novice drama. Jennifer Hamlin earned a bronze award in junior parliamentary debate, and Uriel Vazquez was a bronze medalist in novice parliamentary debate. Other finalists included Arcelia Alvarez, Nichole Barta, Trevor Elledge, Patrick Seaborn and Greg Somers.
